Last month I attended the 2 day AWE Conference at the Hotel Arts in Calgary. As entrepreneurs when it comes to workshops, conferences and networking we have to be careful that we don't lose ourselves in attending too many events. They do eat up time, resources and funds. This particular annual conference caught my attention because it was for 'established businesses'.
Participants ranged from small home based to store front to million dollar companies. Ages and time in business were also diverse. As a business coach and editor this afforded me an opportunity to engage in some great conversations. I got a chance to listen to those in attendance as well as the speakers.
The presenters covered a range of topics with only a few missing the mark by forgetting that we were not start-ups and had quite a bit of experience and know-how behind us. No matter what the venue you can always tell the speakers who deliver the one talk fits all pitch. Whenever we give speeches or workshops material should always be adjusted to fit the event.
I also decided to disconnect from my business during those two days. You gain more value through your interactions and by concentrating on what is at hand than in answering routine emails.
Clients often ask how much they should annually spend on workshops and conferences, there is no easy answer to that question. Obviously expenses should be in proportion to company revenue. You also need to assess what you hope to gain from the experience; that is usually not tangible but can take the form of rejuvenation, knowledge and connections that will have a positive if not immediately apparent affect on your business
One of the new acquaintances that I made was Mary Anderson, Executive Director of WEConnect Canada. WCC is built upon the US model, WBENC (Women Business Enterprise National Council). This Canadian non-profit organization is opening doors to supply chain opportunities for women business enterprises by connecting them to the growing global demand from corporations and the public sector for diverse suppliers. Mary submitted an article entitled Get certified by WEConnect Canada – an attractive proposition!
Until next month,

I know that the photograph with this newsletter has absolutely nothing to do with the topic but aren't we all tired of those business women shaking hands, in a group networking photographs! Instead I thought that you might like to envision yourself on this patio with an ice tea and good book.
