Brainstorming is a technique designed to generate a large number of ideas for the solution of a problem. Is it an old-fashioned concept that has had its day or does it just need to be re-defined?
A Canadian Business article Getting Drowned Out By the Brainstorm comes from the; past its time, inefficient and somewhat ineffective angle. Perhaps the process has just become so staged and carries with it an overtone of pressure that yes it is no longer the best venue for creative and fresh ideas.
I don't happen to believe that you need numbers of people in order to get results. A business coaching session will sometimes branch off into spontaneous brainstorming mode.
When a client is pondering something I suggest that they keep a legal size pad close by, anytime that something related to their quandary comes to mind just write it down then step away. Don't censor it or re-write it just put it on the paper as it came into your head. Then preferably at least a week or two later, block off some quiet time, sit down and look at what you have. Or use it as a reference point when you are meeting with a coach, consultant, graphic or web designer.
As for the corporate/office brainstorming; more spontaneity, no censoring and perhaps just involve those who are closest to the project. Don't push, if nothing comes up then let it go even if there is a deadline. Too much pressure will only lead to bad ideas. If you are heading the project and don't like what the group comes up with, ask for individual contributions. Which brings us back to that legal size yellow pad.
